This one was already in the garden, totally overgrown along with some buis and a pyracantha. I'm afraid that last year I severely 'renovated' the whole lot, in summer :/
I usually just prune them to shape them in March, but the locals here do much the same as your friends. They do respond well to hard pruning, don't they!

Love these shrubs, mine not in flower as yet...do you prune yours much after flowering Karen, all my pals pruned theirs hard back in Autumn, then another prune again in April..
