Early Winter in N.E. Downunder - Allamanda cathartica 'Sunee' (Allamanda cathartica)

I really like this one!!!

It is great. This is the dwarf variety and doesn't become as rampant as the original. This one can easily be pruned into a shrub which is what I've been trying to do.

Does it have a scent?

30 Jun, 2011

No, Alexandramou, no scent.

Yes Homebird, a little bit of sunshine in the garden.

Bernieh:

It's too bad the scent has been hybridized out of it!

I have Allamanda cathartica and it has a terrific scent!

Yes that's definitely a downside to the development of these new hybrids. My other Allamanda is such a sickly thing. It was planted in the wrong spot long before I got here and despite being trimmed back to encourage more growth, it continues to be a spindley thing that just seems to want to shoot up my Sterculia treetop where it's rarely seen. Obviously it's seeking the sun but it doesn't put on much of a show. I've given up on it now.

Bernieh:

That's what has been done to many of the Mandevilla varieties, also.

I heard Allamada can be propagated from cuttings very easily (I've never tried it, though). Maybe a cutting-grown plant needs to be moved to a new spot. :>)

Yes I've got a cutting that's finally taken off. I'm hoping to plant it down the driveway. I didn't find it terribly easy to get a cutting to strike ... just haven't developed the touch!

Bernieh:

Did you start your cutting in water or directly in soil?

4 Jul, 2011

No this one I started in soil. I did try starting others in water, but had no luck. It's probably our water ... it's bore water and may not be ideal for this job. I tried a few in soil, but only one made it.

I've used rainwater in the past to start cuttings. This seems to work pretty well. It's better than using the horrible hard water we have here.
