I planted these from a tub where they just appeared. Since putting them in the garden, they have increased in size and volume.

Scotsgran, dunno what sort of soil we've got but can't grow azaleas, rhodedendrons and hydrangeas (apart from a climbing hydrangea). But we've a magnolia that does OK and a camelia which is ?sort of OK (hasn't flowered this year but could be due to the bad winter). When I took the orchids from the tub, I just lifted them wholesale into the hole dug in the border so I don't know whether it was a tuber or not. Hope this makes sense to you.

Thanks Sheilar. I just wondered.Doesn't sound like acid soil which rhodos love. I do that, just empy pots into the garden wholesale. It is easier than separating everything out. It does make for interesting combinations at times. I bought a white plant at an Open Garden last year. It had a weed? which looked very like a phlox seedling so I planted the lot. It is a lilac phlox and is a good companion to the white Astrantia Shaggy. I'll have to visit again and get a name for it.

Meadowland, as I said in previous (above) comment, I transferred the whole lot from a tub without disturbing the roots so I don't know whether they're bulbs or not. (These are 'wild' orchids by the way).

What kind of soil do you have Sheilar? When you dug them up was the root a tuber? I have this in the garden and I would like to give someone a piece of it but I am worried about disturbing it and losing it if I try to split it.
