Monarda 'Prairie Nights'

Monarda 'Prairie Nights' (Monarda didyma (Bergamot))

It's a slightly paler colour than the other Monarda - 'Hartswood Wine'.

Another one to get......
How tall is this Spritz? Is it suitable for the front of the border or middle? The flower colour is just right for my garden.

I think it's about 2' tall. I'm useless at guessing heights! I have it towards the edge of the border, not at the front - so it's a mid-border plant. :-)

Thank you. I shall be looking out for this.

Hope you find one. :-)

Couldn't believe my eyes this morning: sat in Sainsburys cafe having a coffee and a big breakfast with extra mushrooms, and looking at the Daily Express when what should the readers plant offer be: yes, 6 varieties of monarda!! Couldn't believe it!! If 2 lots were ordered they would throw in a another 6 for free.
Just when I am going on holiday on Friday as well, so I will have to pass on this one.

Very attractive.....

Thanks, Dd.

I saw that, G'sdad - but of course they'd be little plug-plants, so patience would be needed! lol.

lovely shot Spritz.

I've only recently "discovered" monarda. The one I bought has developed a bad case of powdery mildew. Are they all susceptible to this?

Certainly some are, yes. I has a red one which suffered badly, so I got rid of it. The two I have now seem fine - so far. :-))

Yes the one I bought recently is a reddish pink

stunning a few weeks ago when I took the above but a mess now.

What a shame - are you keeping it?

2 Aug, 2011

Yes i'll give it another try next year. It's in a pot at the moment and still has some flowers. Once it has finished flowering I'll cut off most of the worst affected leaves, spray against mildew and plant in the garden.

If it does OK next year fine, otherwise it will have to go.

That's basically what I did. I wonder if certain cultivars are more prone than others?

2 Aug, 2011

Yes that's what I was wondering. They're beautiful but I can't be bothered with things that require regular spraying.

No, nor me, not in my large garden. I have enough to do without cosseting. Shame, though!
