Scadoxus multiflorus

Scadoxus multiflorus (Scadoxus multiflorus)

These have been sat in their pots since April and done nothing - then the flower stem started to emerge on Friday night. It now stands about 80mm tall!
A member of the Amaryllidaceae family, the flowers appear before the foliage.

I used to own one of these Meanie...lovely global red flowers....I left it outside, accidently, and forgot about it....:<(

Doh!!!! How could you?!
They have them growing in the botanic gardens in Oxford - it's like a very vivid red summer flowering Allium isn't it.
How did you rest it over the winter Motinot?

I know Meanie...I was very upset, at the time....I kept it in a warmish sun room almost dry Meanie.....I had it for years.....:<(

Thanks Moti - does that mean that you kept it evergreen?

I really don't know Sticki - I've not seen them for sale around here, except in the "very expensive, award winning" florist at £8 a stem!

they sell them in boxes with the soil and the pot already for you to set them off, if you put them in the right place you can almost watch them grow.

It will become a very nice globular flower head after a few weeks.

A few weeks! It took a few days Balcony - the first bloom is now going over! It was startling how quickly it all happened.
