Pixi & Paul, i always use barley straw in my pond and i dont get algea. I get it from the pet shop as its cheaper and every 2-3mths i change it with new, when i put the new in though i leave the old one in for 2wks while to new one starts working proper, i also do it right through the winter aswell.

Sorry for your algea problem...touch wood never had the problem...doesn't the sun cause that problem!! just asking...

I think it is the sun that causes it, Sue...and too many nutrients in the water...
...oxygenating plants will help...and maybe change the fish food...
We also can put in stuff called Crystal O, which kills the algae, but is kind to the plants, fish and other critters...
