Your very lucky, look after it. I think both our common and crested newt are now protected.
When we were kids there were loads of them in the canal near where we lived. We would take them home in a jam jar and have newt races. My dad would always return them back to the canal at the end of the day.

thanks Grannyb, i remember having loads in our pond at the park i lived in as a kid, but as you say this is the first i've seen in a very long time..

My OH has reminded me we used to have them in our pond at our old house. They seemed to like the silty end of the pond, and would cling to the pond weed.

ahh i have a bog garden that slopes and leads into the pond maybe it's because of that.
