Lovely bush D. Is it evergreen and how big does it grow?

Hi GB, yes it is evergreen, mine is about 10ft in ht by 5ft across. According to the RHS they can reach 17ft (5m) by 17ft but I prune this one to a large shrub size. But my new one I am just go to let it grow up and up. Grown as a shrub they are lovely but they can be grown as hedges to.

That's a shame, it would be too big for my small garden.

Clarice...I walked past this lovely bush at the GC today priced at £1.99 in the red label section. Perhaps having it as a small shrub might work, does it keep its colour if it's continually pruned?

I think to keep it small you would have to keep pruning it and lose the red leaves?

I have just planted some of these, along with ligustrum, to create a high hedge/screen, D - they told me at the nursery that they are fast growers...How long, do you think, before they get going?

Be mindful Grannyb because there are dwarf versions and yours could be a tiny one - at that price.

I have a couple here and mine are about 4 years old and are roughly 4' wide by about 5' tall, they do indeed get very tall.
You need to be constantly hacking at them to keep them as a small shrub.
Karen, they're not 'that' quick, mine have taken all that time to get to this point - you could try and accelerate them by feeding (Miracle Grow etc.) fortnightly from March - September.

They are fast growers as a shrub, I planted one 12" tall in good compost with blood fish and bone in May and it is already 18" higher and wider and I do water when its very dry KF.

18'' in just part of a season is a good start!...I put them in a mix of soil and plantation compost a few weeks ago, but I think I might give them a little feed as well...

thanks for the info all. Maybe it's not one for my garden as it is quite small and it seems like an awful lot of pruning for one bush. I look for something smaller.

I think you are right GB. I dont see the point of it as a shrub if you have to prune it to keep it small.

Looks great! I have mine gorwing along the fence..only prune the front leaves so it grows up and along..have to tie it to the fence but it seems to work..its a great plant!

One of the first Shrubs we bought for our garden when we moved here Denise...It was approx 1ft tall...It is now three years on, and OH just measured it 7ft high x 4ft 6 wide. We prune the lower branches off, and there's a huge Fern growing underneath, in it's shade and loving it...we get masses of flowers too....When I remember I'll take a pic..to show you...

They Flower April -May Denise, and they can get little berries too...thinking about it I'm sure ours has flowered since too...They love the Sun...Lovely Shrub I love it especially when all the little red shoots appear...

Yes I get a lot of red in the spring too

I love all the changes this shrub goes through...throughout the Season....:o)))
