Growing through non flowering shrubs...Ideal to bring extra colour to the garden.....self seeding, and reliable...love the delicate leaf formation on these plants...

I think we all do some of that Pix...move things around...I have a couple of things in mind for moving later on in the season...I like it in among plants, it gets tall, so if its grown through another plant or shrub, the Cosmos gets held up without the need to stake...

I also love cosmos how tall does it grow Sue ? I didn't do any this year but a friend gave me a few plants but they don't seem to be very big ....

That one in the photo is just one plant, and it stands at about 5ft...They love the sun, and moisture in the soil..not dry...Have you planted them yet Stripes...!!
They are quite easy...I have some more nearer the front of another border, and they are about three ft high but that's just right for there...Hope this helps...:o))

They're lovely, Sue...splashes of colour! They're a feaature of our communal displays this year...along with some really unusual grasses :)))

I must say the Villages/Communes always have a splendid show which changes to suit the seasons, just keeping the structure Shrubs etc...and building and rebuilding the design around them..Our Village always looks a picture, and all the memorials etc, so well kept...

I agree Sue...our village isn't big enough to have displays but the town always has lovely troughs and baskets :)))

...and particularly nice this year, with these cosmos! They always look like they're dancing in the air, don't you think? :)))

OH Lady at the Chateau...loves them, apparently they come from South Africa...whether the seeds originated there or were taken there on the Ships..don't know for sure...but she would always keep several seed heads for scattering back down on the ground where they were growing....So I followed suit...I do like the Chocolate Cosmos though, so would have to buy a packet of fresh seeds for that...that's if I can get them here...
Yes they do look like they're dancing on air...it's the same as Gaura 'Whirling Butterflies' similar long long stems, pretty flowers atop...

:))))
I have chocolate cosmos but bought as small plants (annuals, I thought at the time!) in Spring from one of the local nurseries...planted them last year...and they're back now twice as big! :))))
Perennial here, it would seem! :))))

Do you think they self seeded !!...It would be good if they do...
6 Aug, 2011
No, Sue....I know they didn't...because I knew where I'd put them last year, along with the 'hotlips' and the gaura etc...
So, when I was moving the others I was aware of and found the dormant roots of the chocolate cosmos! Even better, don't you think? If you can collect the seeds and the root survives the winter..... :)))))
6 Aug, 2011
Oh for sure, much better...How big were the Plants when you bought them, can you remember!!
6 Aug, 2011
I can't remember, Sue...they were just the same size as all the other young summer plants...in pots around 10cm diam.?
7 Aug, 2011
I grew mine from seeds..I thought they were jsut annuals? Ooh I need to move them!!!!!!!
7 Aug, 2011

Dead head and throw the seed head behind the plant, or wait until the plant has almost finished then do it...either way seeds will set...some can be transplanted to other places next year....This purple and a white, generally come up the same place each year...just pull out what's not wanted...
