Yes, it a very common practice to have trees, shrubs and other plants close to the house (which isn't a good idea). In many cases, especially inland it's to kept the houses cool from the sweltering heat which we can get in summer (like we're having right now, lol!) it's very hot and humid.
I'll post a pic of my Acalypha 'Jungle Dragon' soon, which is against the house in the backyard. lol! :>)

I love this, I am always intrigued by the way houses in San diego have large trees or shrubs growing right up to the houses. Is this to keep the houses cool?
