Thanks for your advice,on these..you said I had to be patient...! ..love them...The first flower had little holes in it,but the rest are ok,so I can live with that..:o)

Thanks Cinders.First time for me too,.I planted five in a pot,in spring, and kept them in the growhouse till late May...and just waited..and waited ..! One of them has come up blind, but there are plenty of buds on the others..I thought there would only be one flower on each stem, but there are approx five ..so very happy with them..There were 25 in the packet,so will definitely do more next year..:o) They cost me £1 ..!!

I got mine at a garden centre,Cinders-but sure I have seen them in Wilko's or one of the pound shops..
thanks Pixi..it's nice to try something different...:o)
Oh that's a shame,Moti..I wonder what happened there ?

Ah, I've just spotted a close-up of them. These are sold as Gladiolus callianthus over here. I just love them. Aren't the flowers so lovely!

Thanks Bernieh..I find it a bit confusing,as these seem to have various names for them..I have seen pics stating Gladiolus too..and they look exactly the same..but whatever,I really like them..:o)

I like them a lot too, and I'm just hoping I haven't lost the two I planted last year. The leaves of one popped up again, but no blooms this time around.

I only planted five in a pot, more of a trial, really, but only four flowered, the other one came up blind..

There seems to be so many different names for these.. think Gladiolus Murielae is their botanical name and also known as, Acidenthera, Abyssinian Gladiolus, Sword lily or peacock orchid..They need a long season to flower in Autumn...perhaps i planted mine too late or yours Bloomer got a good start in your growhouse...I'll try that next year...:>)

I saw them on a pic by Shirley Tulip, and hers were bought as Gladiolus..Murielae,that is why I was a bit confused..so many names for the same plant..I wonder why ? I do think starting them off in the growhouse probably helped,Moti..It is in a sunny position, and I kept them well watered, ias Spritzhenry advised..so I was really pleased they flowered, even though it seemed a long waiting period.

Hi Tet,did you have a good holiday? hope the weather was kind to you...They are pretty aren't they? I shall leave them in the pot,in the growhouse, over winter, and hope for the best.I still have some left to grow next year. They are swaying like little dancers in the strong wind this morning...so flexible and sturdier than I imagined..but we haven't got the 70 miles per hour strength as predicted yet..think that is for later..hope not !

Apart from one hour's downpour on Monday, which we missed being in the tearooms, and Tuesday afternoon, which was predicted so we spent time in Norwich (so we could duck into shops etc), the rest of the week was pretty fair (if a bit windy), thanks Bloomer. We dont like it too warm for sightseeing anyway, so it suited us quite well. The cottage was lovely, highly recommended!
My neighbour had her Acidantheras in a sheltered spot and they survived the winter before last..but not this last one!
I did hear you were in for it today, we are supposed to be a bit luckier, only 40 to 50 mph gusts! about 20-25mph at present. Hope you survive it okay.

Glad you had a nice time Tet,and the cottage was nice.We don't like it too hot for sightseeing either..It's a long time since we visited Norwich..but we liked it..had a young child in tow,so not all that interested looking at the sights..we stayed in a caravan near Yarmouth..so the beach was more to her thing !
The wind is still not as bad as predicted yet..but its sunny and quite warm..the local radio is still giving out weather warnings though, especially for our very high motorway, over the Pennines..M62..and for high sided vehicles..glad its not me up there..a nightmare for them, and they have deadlines for deliveries..

It doesnt bear thinking about..its quite frightening cos I remember in 1988 when driving our cortina a tree came down so close to me the leaves brushed the boot! Very close shave.
We've had very little sun today..very stormy and cloudy looking, and very windy. Not as bad as Yorkie, poor dear..all those lovely begonias..such a shame.
Looked at forecast..more of the same tomorrow but looks like the wind is going to drop completely on Wednesday/Thursday but currently winds about 30mph with bigger gusts.

These have a gorgeous scent too, Sandra ... have you detected it yet? ... :o)

I planted these this year they are very pretty flowered early August but no more flowers since!

We were very lucly,Tet,as we live in the bottom of the Valley, and more sheltered than where Yorkshire lives..but today has compensated,by being like a lovely summers day..not good for tomorrow though, lots of rain for us!
I never thought to smell them,Shirley..must do that before they finish..:o)
Yours were a bit earlier than mine,Carole..and there are still a few flowers on..but can't see them lasting much longer..I love them, and will plant them again next year..
