The Hong Kong Orchid trees are blooming very early this year. I've seen many almost in full bloom, already. Typically, this tree doesn't start blooming until mid-Sept. and peak bloom is in early-mid January. Very strange! Photo taken Aug. 29, 2011.

Milky:
Yes, I love this tree. It's so nice to see this tropical tree (widely planted as a street tree in San Diego) in full bloom in the middle of winter.

Yes, and nature sure let's us know when there's changes.

Surreylad:
Yes, the last couple of years I've noticed real changes in the trees and plants here (especially their blooming out of season).

They are stunning blooms!

Meanie:
The fragrance is heavenly, also.

May have to get some seeds for the hell of it I think..........

Meanie:
This tree is a sterile hybrid...all trees are grafted or grown from air layering and sometimes from cuttings which are difficult. If you ever see seeds listed for sale, they are NOT the Hong Kong Orchid tree.
If you're interested in Bauhina variegated, I can send you plenty of seeds. This tree produces a tremendous amount of seed pods...and it's widely planted as a street tree here.

Thanks for that advice Delonix!
I'm looking at Bauhinia variegata.......
3 Sep, 2011
You're welcome! Bauhinia variegata is much easier to grow in a pot...and it's not as tropical as the Hong Kong Orchid tree. The easiest Bauhinia species to grow in a pot (my experience) is B. galpinii. However, it demands a tremendous amount of heat (I mean really hot temps) to bloom well.

Thanks!
Looks as if B.variegata is my next project.........

Meanie:
I'll see if I can get you some seeds.

Me too please....;o)

Bauhinia variegata doesn't grow there? I would think it would be a common tree there.

Oh stop it Delonix,
We don't have variety when it comes to trees here. I will start taking pics for you and you'll see what I mean....we don't have the beautiful trees you guys have over there. Corfu is 90% olive trees...boring.

Wow! I'm so surprised! I would think Jacaranda, Bauhinia variegata, Corymbia ficifolia, Tipuana tipu, Tabebuia and Ficus retusa 'nitida' would be very widely grown trees there (these trees should grow very well in your climate).
We do have a huge variety of flowering trees here. I think many species of street trees are planted so there's several blooming all year (especially in the tourist areas).
There's a lot of olive trees here, too. lol! :>)

Delonix, I must admit CA has some beautiful flowering trees!!!
I'm sure they would grow very well here. Maybe other parts of Greece???? (doubt it)
Olive trees.....not very pretty trees. :o}

Yes, and you wouldn't believe the influx of seeds from exotic trees coming from Thailand and Southeast Asia. I especially like the the tropical Cassia species/varieties (Cassia 'Agnes' and C. bakeriana, marginata, grandis, javanica) people have been trialing many here. Many are doing well in S. CA.
I'm pretty sure many of the flowering trees growing here would grow well there where you live. Although, I don't think some of the really tropical trees may not, such as the Hong Kong Orchid tree.

That would be most excellent! I'm still scratching my head as to what I have that I can send you!
I do have seed pods forming on my Alsobia dianthiflora..........

Meanie:
I would love seeds to Alsobia dianthiflora. It's a beautiful plant! It should do very well under my shade structure in my front yard. I've read this plant is hardy to 35ºF/1.7C...although, I would think it couldn't be exposed to this temp for very long.

If I can harvest them then some will be on their way to you!

Thank you! :>)
