Dowdeswelle delphiniums with a lovely companion planting of Canterbury Bells in a private New Zealand garden.

Hi back Paul. You sound a bit like me when it comes to delphiniums. I had a lovely show of them a couple of years ago, in my previous garden, but the following year they never came up again. Such a shame. They weren't the spectacular Dowdeswell delphiniums I have been showing on here, but they were still nice. I am going to try again, & this time I will do it with the Dowdeswelles ones, as they are a lot taller & apparently strong enough not to require lots of staking.

What a lovely combo! like campanulas too...but my delphs bloomed twice in one season and died! Once lived in the far north (on James Bay) and found and liberated a clump of delphs that had naturalized in that severe climate. (They were in an old homestead garden that had been almost consumed by erosion from the Moose River.) Planted them in my backyard and they grew to 12 ft tall! beautiful things in a lovely soft blue with a small white bee. They thrived there for two seasons and when we moved south I brought seed with me... They started up fine and I bought some Pacific Giant delphs to round out my collection. Then as I said, they bloomed twice- once at their regular time in early summer and then again in October (mid autumn)- and the next spring there was no sign of them! :-(... Will look for Dowdeswelles...thanks for the tip!
