The metal arch and seating area

I've been working really hard on this area today as there was some serious over-crowding in the area to the right of the arch. Took out a big Neillia Thibetica shrub and a few herbaceous things. Simplifying. Notice how defoliated my birches are already because of the winds last week.

good plan Linda. I am also using my greenhouse for overwintering stuff this year. I put some mint and some tarragon in there and all the baby plants I've propogated. I might go in to 'Alpines' in it next year. Fed up of rubbish tomatoes! It would make a nice alpine house.

It's very satisfying to have a good clear out at this time of the year knowing it will look tidy overwinter. The weather had changed by the time I got home so I ended up putting the heating on and watching tv. I could really do with a few evenings outside to get on top of things. Last night it was dark so early too.

Rotten weather eh Annie. I heard on the radio today that we've just had the coldest summer since 1993. It is getting dark early now though....groan. I have a lovely Cornus Florida there and it's not growing very well, so hopefully now the Neillia has gone it will get more of the goodness from the soil and grow up a little.

Yes, it's going to be a much simpler garden from now on M. Thank you!

Looking good Karen. I have been tidying my main shrubs and hedges so that they have a good shape through the winter months.... just a little snip here and there. It is very hard work and my muscles are growing. :o) I have decided to lift the Echinaceas and put them in the greenhouse. I am fed up having to replace them.
