Alexandramou:
They grow very, very quickly to this size. Usually, less than two years. I have an Alocasia portadora which grew to 6ft/2m in less than a year. It's hasn't grow much for some reason the last two summer. I'll post a photo very soon. The leaves were a little burned from the horrible heat wave a couple of weeks ago.
Here's photo from a couple of years ago.

Thanks! :>)
LOL! Alexandramou, those are Crinum asiaticum (not ferns)...this is the purple-leaf variety of Queen Emma Lily. You can see some of the flowers in the middle bottom of the photo.
It's a very common tropical lily which grow in parts of California and is very widely grown in Hawai'i.

A.portora likes sun..all the big ones up here aren't getting much shade. Mine gets shade...and has been slow too. Dec 2013's cold melted a couple of leaves.

I had gorgeous Alocasia species which would grow very fast, large and beautiful. Here in San Diego I can't get them to grow well more than a few years. The bugs eat the trunks up very quickly.
