Known as the Kowhai (pronounced Kofi) This grows into a large tree of around 8 metres high, & is covered in hanging clusters of bright yellow flowers, which are similar in shape to a smaller NZ Native tree known as the Kaka Beak. Our beautiful NZ Native bird the Tui, simply cannot resist the sweet nectar of the flowers. We have a relatively young Kowhai tree in our garden of around 4 meters high, & a fully-mature one hanging over our back fence, so the tuis come visiting daily now that it is in flower.

This is lovely, and I doubt that it could handle our winter, but I can dream...........

Will have to check if it grows in the South Island, as they have very cold winters with snow. If it does, then I imagine it could handle an English winter .... I spent many years living in Buckinghamshire, so not far from you I think, & winter's weren't too harsh there.

The last two winters have been very harsh here - minus 18c in my garden one night!

NZ has many native plants which are endemic to NZ ... meaning they are still not grown anywhere else in the world, & this Kowhai Golden Dragon tree is one of them.
