Asplenium nidus - Bird's Nest Fern

Bird's Nest Ferns grow huge fronds to almost 8ft/2.4 m tall. It's an easy fern to grow in shade with lots of water. Photo taken in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. on Sept. 15, 2011.

Yes, this is definitely a very tender fern. It will not tolerate temps even close to freezing without dying.

A.australisicum- spelled something like that is near identical..and is hardy to 9b,some say. Mine has done very well- 4-5' fronds. I've never seen any cold damage at ~30f even. BUT,its under Podocarpus tree's ,not in the open.

I've had this fern in the Bay Area...and have seen many. They seem to do very well, there. They definitely need a protected area from sun and snail/slugs. The cold doesn't seem to bother them much there...only a 1990 type freeze would kill them.
