Chokecherry, Prunus virginiana

Chokecherry, Prunus virginiana (Prunus virginiana)

This is the canada red in flower in spring. New growth is green an mature growth red. These are the new spring leaves with the early flower before they turned a dark red for summer. Alas, none kept the following berries, but they are small and put in last year so I'm not surprised. Maybe berries next year, the birds love them.

Bet that is wonderful in the spring.

The chokecherry is one of the most popular spring blooming trees in the area. Only about a week to 2weeks of bloom before we are too hot.

We have a prunus - they're lovely - the flowers are very similar to the cotoneaster ones

Sounds lovely Paul. There are so many varieties of them from these chokecherries through to plums and some ornamental's that don't fruit at all like my prunus triloba, with large double pink flowers. Great Genus.
