Shelf Mushroom on the Gate

One of the pieces of birch on the gate has a fungus growing throughout, a little shelf forming out the bottom, and this big shelf mushroom bulging from a crack in the bark. I did slice the bark, as birch bark is waterproof and I was afraid of a moisture issue. I hope the gate holds in there for years to come.

LOL! It has been wonderful watching this grow, common fungus on the birchwood, but I've never watched one get 'blown up'.

It was a bit yucky, but so fascinating. These can get very old, I felt more lucky to have one fasten so quickly to my little gate, adding the old natural illusion. :-)
