Oh, the Erythrina for sale is "Crista-galli" I was sooooo tempted to buy it. I need to make sure it will survive well in my garden first.

Result!
Alex - it should be fine in your garden barring a freakily cold winter. You may have to protect it this winter if it's a small plant.

Meanie,
It seems I have to buy it then.

They dislike strong winds in my experience - for the first time I had flower buds this year, but the strong winds a few weeks ago put paid to them........

Oh no....we get a lot of wind here....
Need to find a sheltered spot.

Alexandramou:
Listen to me very carefully: Erthrina crista-galli will never, I mean never be damaged by cold weather in your garden. It's an extremely hardy tree! (it's hardy to a least -12ÂșC.). There's a large one growing on the grounds of of the Capital Building in Washington DC. It's one of the hardiest species of Erythrina.

Ooops! I forgot to comment on your original comment. lol!
Thanks! Yes, hopefully this one will produce seeds. I know my neighbor Randallsd has had some seeds of his seedling, already.

Meanie:
Large trees in the ground tolerate strong winds with no problem. There's many here close to the coast, where there's strong winds.
Although, you make a good point, because many species of Erythrina, such as: caffra, lysistemon, humeana do not tolerate strong winds without many large branches being broken.

Milky, thanks! :>)

So it is possible to grow them here then?

Dottydaisy2:
I'm not sure. Erythrina crista-galli doesn't like cold wet soil, especially when young.

Great shot Delonix1! It's nice to see your Deppea blooming for you, I really like color.
Pollen swap?
14 Oct, 2011
Hey Neighbor:
Thanks! Yes, let's swap pollen.
It's blooming well! However, I was getting very concerned about this heatwave! Some of the leaves started falling off when the super hot weather arrived on Tuesday. I know the heat is why my last Deppea died 3 years ago, it was the big heat wave (the worst in 20 years, if you remember) in fall of 2008.

Delonix,
Yes Sir..."Listen to me very carefully" lol lol lol You sound like a school teacher.
Thanks for that wonderful information, if it's still for sale then I will plant it in my garden with a smile.
It's still raining on and off from yesterday!!!! One more day and I've had enough I think. I don't want the heat to come back but I would love some sun. It's nice if it can rain once a week, does wonders. I hope your heatwave is over by now.

Alexandramou:
Sorry! I just wanted to make a strong point. :>)
I bet you could grow quite a few Erythrina species.
E. caffra may be a little too tender to grow there. We have many giants trees here, however, it's a dangerous tree because very large branches break so easily. It's a very beautiful tree when it bloom in winter, though.
With all the rain you're receiving, you don't have to water.
I would love that! I'm sure the sun will come out soon.

Don't be sorry, you made me giggle...;o)
Yes, no need to water for the next few days. The sun will be back out tomorrow around midday.
15 Oct, 2011
Glad I make you giggle! :>)
You're so lucky you don't have to water! I've been watering like crazy every day...and it's cooled down a bit...only to warm back up again starting tomorrow. lol! Crazy weather!!!
17 Oct, 2011
Crazy weather is right. Sunny and cold here now. I mean cold! We are wearing light jackets this week and last week we were still in t-shirts.
17 Oct, 2011
I hope the crazy cold weather warms back up for you soon!
