No, not at all. You can get seeds to sow under glass in early spring, plug plants by mail order from Dobies. Mr Fothergill etc, or larger packs later from GCs. Full sized plants are expensive, though. I usually get some plugplants and also sow a packet of seeds. :-)

I was looking at these lovely things with an eye to fill ins for the area which is in the process of going from a grubby lawn to a meadow. the area is in the spill of a large light on an electric pole ...just to one side of the driveway. Not my idea of exceptional landscaping but this is what I've inherited. Asked the Hydro to remove it...they just turned down the wattage! how's that for cooperation? The extra light favours the nighttime revelry of the june bugs whose larvae defoliate the lawn. I have removed as much of the old sod as I could and the raccoons have eaten as much of the grubs as they could...so now I'm planning to plant drought resistant plants...and the ganzania are so pretty and tough. their flowers have the sheen of taffeta! and sooo many lovely colours to choose from that a couple of packets of seed or a tray of plugs (as you say) will do the job really well.

Thank you, Lori. The same to you! Are 'June bugs' the same as chafer bugs? We bought Nematodes and treated all our lawn areas back in September, so we hope we've seen the last of them.

Not sure what they may be called in England, B. They are common all over N. A. and there are over 200 different species of the same beetle...related to the scarabs.

Hmmm...the chafer grubs I dig up in my garden in the spring onwards are cream, 'C' shaped nasties with legs and a rust-coloured 'face'. They're about half an inch long or a bit more.
