Heavy rain in Manawatu Gorge

Oct 2011 This early morning milk train was very lucky not to have plunged into the deep river at the bottom of this gorge just 25 mins from where I live, when heavy rain brought down part of the hill above it. Thankfully, no-one was hurt but the railway line is still closed. The hill on the other side of the gorge also came down, in a massive slip, & the gorge will remain closed until it is all cleared away & the hill area stabilized. Again, thank God, no-one was on the road when it came down.

Fortunately, there is another route drivers can take, which though longer, is actually a lovely drive .... that was also closed in big floods we had in 2004 when the bridge was swept away, but thankfully the gorge was open at that time. I will put up a photo now of the other side of the gorge, where the massive slip came down over the road. Not the first time this has happened, as the whole area is of shale & is really quite unstable. The gorge was closed for several weeks last year, when there was another big slip, but it only covered half the road, so we had one way traffic going through, & I was actually driving through the gorge at that time & thought it was so lucky that no-one had been crushed beneath it. But this one is massive compared with that one in 2010.

The power of the elements can be awesome. Its a miracle no was was hurt. Will it cause hardship to the area? as presumably it will be closed for a long time?
