Karen, this may seem like a very daunting task you have, but it must be a case of do a small section at a time to your satisfaction, then move on to the next bit. I would say start nearest the house, as you will look out on it most.

I totally agree with Spritz, start small and close that way you can get your stride. If you take on too much at once it can be overwhelming and you could get discouraged.

The conifers to the right have all been cut down, as they were about 40 feet high and very leggy at the bottom, so severe prunning wouldnt have made any difference and besides there are so many pretty fast growing shrubs, i wouldnt want leylandi through choice. There is membrane,with bark, leaves and other debris.
