I actually measured and the blooms are about 4" across.

Just been searching through LOTS of clematis pictures on the web and am still unsure! To me it still looks very close to a Jackmanii, but research remains ongoing!

Another possibility - 'Warsaw Nike'. Saw it in a local garden centre.

Warsaw Nike good possibility. I have one that is darker than this but there is a lot of colour variation.Large, velvety red-violet to purple-violet flowers with a slightly redder bar. Yellow anthers on green-white filaments. Good luck!
