Oh dear. My garden got a bit of a battering Wednesday night. The Giant Scotch Thistle was saved and, miraculously, the delphinium it fell on was left relatively unscathed too.

Hi Sid,
Very sorry about the damage you sustained.
Can you help please?
Onopordum acanthium has very large silvery grey leaves with a 'woolly' coating that lay on the ground, can you confirm I've got the right thistle?
I have MS and the large ground leaves from this plant can be boiled in water, the water saved, then frozen in the form of ice cubes. The resulting ice cubes are very medicinal for my condition. Once melted and honey has been added, the drink helps with MS Spasms each morning. I used this thistle many years ago but have lost track of any leaves from this specimen.
Can you help me by providing some of your ground leaves so I can make up some new medicine?
I appreciate your help and look forward to your reply.
Polly.

Hi Polly - thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, this photo was posted on here back in 2008 - in fact I'd quite forgotten about it! I haven't grown any of this plant this year, so I can't send you any leaves, although I would have been glad to otherwise. I may have some seeds somewhere if you'd like to grow your own? If you would like me to send you some seeds, please can you PM me and I will send you my address so you can then send me an SAE. This plant is indeed Onopordium acanthium - the Giant Scotch Thistle. It forms a large rossette of large silvery leaves in its first year and then shoots up to about 7 ft tall the following year. It then flowers and dies. I had no idea it had medicinal properties - that's very interesting. Let me know if I can send you some seeds.
