What is it growing in Alex?

My diagnosis is too little humidity and not enough air movement. Orchids are very subject to these types of problems indoors. My Epidendrum orchids I brought into the house 4 days ago have many flowers falling off (it's too hot and dry indoors). I need to move them back outdoors.

It's as far away from the woodburner as possible and the radiator is turned off. My Paph is in the same place and that's doing fantastic. Thermometer is reading 20C at the moment. Maybe it is too warm. Why does this happen a day or two before they opoen though?
It's growing in orchid bark and perlite.
Think I should move it?

It could be too hot and dry but I'm always opening my windows....even when it's cold (Wood burner stays on). Corfu is a very damp island. I can't move it outside now...can I?
I hope you moved your orchids back outside.

I use a slightly more organic mix with some compost and sphag moss - it's possible that the pseudobulb is working too hard in too dry a mix.

Hhhhmmm. Nothing I can do now...the brown has moved inwards today. I have my Tongariro bulbs next to this....they are doing fine (so far). Let's see if the same happens to them, then we might figure out the problem.

20ºC is definitely not too hot! However, the relative humidity should always be 50% or greater for most orchids. Do you have a hygrometer? When growing plants indoors one should always have a hygrometer. It measures the relative humidity in your house. I bet your humidity is very low. Most heating devices drastically reduce the humidity indoors.

Phalaenopsis hybrid orchids don't seem to be bothered so much from low humidity. I had mine indoors when it was blooming for many months.

Your Pleione may do better outdoors in shade, in a protected spot. I've never seen Pleione growing indoors; not even when I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Don't be too sure about the humidity in my house. We had to buy a dehumidifier....it would start at 97% humidity in the bedrooms on rainy days . Now, with the woodburner installed the humidy in better. (dehumidifer broke down....too much use , lol)

The plan is to move them outside after they have bloomed. Don't you think it's dangerous to move them out now???

No, no shadeat all on the top floors. Eventually all the balconies (run three sides of the house) will have verandas (shade structures) What do you do first???? We've build this house from scratch.

You don't have any large trees for shade? A good very good extremely fast-growing tree would be Tipu tree (Tipuana tipu). It also makes a good temporary tree, until you get a better shade tree up and growing. The Tipu tree can grow up to 15ft/4.6m a year (under ideal conditions). It loves heat and is very drought tolerant. It also is a very hardy tree (to at least 22ºF/-6ºC or slightly lower for brief periods) native to northern Argentina and Brazil.

Go for the Tipuana tipu tree Alex!

ok, ok, I will shop around for a hygrometer. I just bought myself a hiking compass and a car compass....the car compass is driving me mad. It doesn't seem right to me. I will need to compare the two (when I'm not the one driving).

The Tipuana tipu tree looks amazing. I love those type of leaves and the flowers too. No place to plant anything else for shade. The two large palm trees in the front are still not high enough, the side one is not tall enough either. The back, well....leads to the basement. Need to put up the verandas soon.

Do they sell weather centers there? I have a little weather center, which was cheap. It tells the temp indoor/outdoors and the humidity.

Is you car compass a GPS?

The Jacaranda is a fast growing shade tree. (just thought I would add this in).

Nope, not a GPS. A simple litte compass that you stick to the dash board. It's really cute, I just know how correct it is???

If you ever need seeds for Jacaranda or Tipuana tipu let me know. I have the giant Jacanda tree in the front yard which is dropping seeds pods everywhere right now...and the shopping center where I grocery shop has dozens of large Tipu trees and they're full of seeds.

Is it still cold there? It's 75ºF/24ºC here at 9:30a.m., although it's going to cool down on Sunday and be cool (66ºF/19ºC. feel sorry for me) all next week! :>(

I haven't seen them for sale,,,,then again I haven't looked. I haven't seen them growing anywhere either, I'm sure I wouldn't miss them!

I know for sure the Tipu tree will grow there...and the Jacaranda should grow there, too.

Some inland parts of San Diego were up to 90ºF/32ºC today...it was pretty darn hot! We're going to go into shock when the weather cools down next week.
