Echinopanax horridum, Devils Club in Autumn

Up high on the bluff about 20 miles from the last bunch I found a stand filled with huge robins feasting on the berries. Unfortunately, they did not return once my camera was out. The leaves are bright against the green. You can see the red berry to the right of the wild Sambucus racemosa, the red berried elder.

As I drove down the peninsula (this was a trip to Kenai peninsula) they would catch my eye, so bright against the darker forest. I hadn't realized they went this color.
