Does the area gets lots of sunshine ?

Terratoonie, the sun hits that area from around 11:00 am through 6:00 pm.

Maybe put rocks or pavings around the base of the clematis, to help keep the ground area cool and stop it from getting too dry ...

Thanks for the suggestion! I was thinking about putting red mulch in that area after the clematis is planted. Do you think that will work?
