(Graceland x Raven's Nest) X [(Caledonia x Lavender Peace) x Awesome Blossom]
Diameter: 6" Height: 18"
Daylilies are not always colorfast, and the first 2 blooms were ruined by the rain. But it is finally showing off. This is from a seed started last year.

Very nice. Do I understand correctly, that you are breeding lilies, Wilieintheazores?

You will find that people who like daylilies also hybridize them. I look forward to tomorrow when I will find out which ones have opened and what they will look like. Then I spend the day looking at them, wondering if I can cross them with something else, or trying to decide if they are worth keeping. I am very lucky that it usually takes only one year from seed to flower. Others have to wait 2 or 3 years.
Another thing about people who grow daylilies from seed is the large number of seedlings they have - I have over 450 that I started last year, and over 300 this year.

Think I have around 150 seedlings now, more starting to sprout too :-), this is another beauty, think I'll just want to keep them all, especially if they all turn out as nice as your seedlings :-))

Ah, you don't see the failures. There is a second seedling to this cross, but it is going soon so that the ones around it have room to grow. Since it usually takes only a year for the first flowers, I can plant them about 12" apart, and thin them out the next year.

I'll have to do that, I only have half an allotment to grow them on and the way they're growing there won't be room if planted too far apart.
Strange how from the same cross they can all be different isn't it.

If you look at the pictures of the seed beds of people like Hansen, or Lambertson, or others like that, you'll notice how close everything is at first. Because of the way genetics work, you need to see what the flower looks like, and realize it won't look better next year. That's why some people start 1,500 seeds for just a couple of plants that are then moved to an area to grow on.

OMG Wylie don't think I could bring myself to compost so many plants, we'll see :-))

Already a second scape is coming up, so I think this will be a star in my garden.
