I have this acer for almost 4 years. each year I tried different locations in my garden as too much sun or too much wind scorch leaves, which are the most attractive part of the tree.

Do you have it in container or planted in the soil?

mine is in the soil, technically it faces south, however we have so many trees [not ours] around the garden that it only gets a few hours sun.
its been in about 3 years??

Definitely acers need light shadow. As you have, probably.

I moved my 'Atropurpureum' to front garden - hope it will like it better there. Last year it lost all leaves due to cold winds.

A. Atropurpureum is lovely, but grows tooo slowly. I have one Aconitifolium in the next garden and it is lovely. It already starts to shape into its umbrella like crown, leaves shoots are very colourful and leaves beautiful. I like it very much, as it seems very independent self made man :)
