This is growing naturally in the woods near my house and they are beautiful this year. I have never seen them put on a show like this.

Not really, it's got a lot of large trees all around it. Most of the dogwoods I see out there grow in quite a bit of shade, they only get filtered sunlight through the trees. None of them are growing close to the road or fields, they're all in the woods a ways.

i bought one last year, no flowers/white bracts then, im not sure how old they have to be before that happens?

Give it another year, I've had the same thing happen. Usually they flower very young and you can see the flower buds by fall. They are woodland trees so they like acidic soil, some wind protection and if it gets hot then it might be a good idea to give them some shade too.

The soil is acidic and there is a wood behind for protection, its a fairly sheltered site altogether, shade is no problem!! So i will keep hoping!! thanks RK

You should ask a local nursery expert about that. There are a number of reasons a shrub or tree can fail to flower and someone who lives in that area could probably help. When dogwoods don't flower here, it is typically related to our climate. Some years we have hard winters and a southern grown dogwood might even die while any flowering dogwood grown in the open probably won't flower after a harsh winter in Michigan. We also have dogwood anthracnose here, which has killed a number of dogwoods mostly in warmer states.

Ok, thank you. It's definitely alive and is still only young so I will keep watching and hoping and can ask locally.
