how do they stay upright....

They grow upright. The trunks on most palms are extremely strong and fibrous. They can tolerate very strong winds without any breakage (most of the time).

they are awesome....closest i have is cordyline, they were blowing in the breeze today. Not a patch on these though...

Yes, palms are awesome. We're very lucky, hundreds of species of palms grow here in San Diego.

Cordyline australis is a good palm look-a-like, it's also very hardy. It is not related to palms, though. I especially like Cordyline terminalis, fruiticosa, stricta...these species are smaller growing. My Cordyline stricta is blooming now. :>)

the flowers are coming out on mine now Delonix. i do love the cordyline bloom. they are only just hardy enough for wales...many people lost thiers this winter but oi was very lucky and they all survived here....

I do like Cordyline flower, too. My Cordyline stricta is blooming now. It has purple-lavender flowers.

Yes, Cordyline australis grows here, too. The flowers on my Cordyline fruiticosa are the same as the C. australis, just smaller. I'll have to get some photos of my C. stricta before it's done blooming.
