This is Tesco rhododendron. Bought it 3 years ago in Tesco. It blooms each year more and more, what I cannot say about other rhodies I have. Must be either genetics, or location or both.

One of my purple rhododendrons is exactly the same and has done very well for me too. I think your right on it being genetics and location.
