Pick an area that gets a lot of sun, but if it is too hot, then some afternoon shade. Fall planting works best for those of us in warmer areas. And if it doesn't freeze where you live, I would get the evergreen or semi-evergreen type.

there is an east side place protected in cold winters but cannot do much about freezing. Last winter some days was -12 in the night.

In that case, the dormant and semi-evergreen types will work best for you. The dormant types die down to the crown, which protects them and they need the cold to perform best.

ok thanks for your piece of advise. Some one gave (offer)me a plant of hemarocalis but didnt tell what excactly is.So I have to follow your advice to be sure.

Yes, the local name thing is the same here in Portugal; Pansies are Amor Perfecta, calla lilies are jarros (pitchers), and it goes on.
