they are sold here as bulbs for christmas ~ for indoors

I see. On Christmas they are just bulbs here. In cellar. In pots. We take them out in the spring. They bloom then for the whole summer.

Balcony is your man - he grows a fair few on his allotment as I recall.

Sunken pots in the garden then in the cellar for winter then, but I'll try a few in the rockery full stop as it's sheltered.
