Wine and Roses Weigela

Wine and Roses Weigela

There's a lot I don't like about these plants (they look terrible in winter) but hard not to appreciate the foliage and flowers. They look great mixed with blues, greens and yellows but it's too bad they look like crap all winter.

Weigelia seems to be doing well this year or is it my imagination?

They're doing really well here too.
I don't mind that they look bad in the winter...I usually just stay in and keep the fire fed then, anyway...

Some winters are so long that I have to have plants that I can enjoy seeing. I don't mind if a few look bad, I just don't want them right up by my house where I have to see them all the time. I almost broke one of my weigelas last winter because I thought it was a pile of dead sticks haha.

I see your point!

Oh dear! Just how long can your winters be, Rk?

depends on the year, being surrounded by the great lakes makes us susceptible to unpredictable weather at times. Warm winter this year, cold the year before. Usually snow falls in November to April. We can get down to -20F (-29 celsius) on the bad years but usually it's a little above that. We've had cold weather until the end of May before, really no telling how long. If I lived closer to the lakes, the snow cover would protect things but not here! Can't wait to head south somewhere warmer!

Wow! That's cold! And long!
We can go down to -14/15°C, but not usually for too long...although the winters have been really unpredictable lately. This Feb. the temps rose to 20/22°C, for two weeks - then suddenly plunged to -18/20, for almost two weeks...I lost loads of plants. :(

I think I would move too, if I was you.

I can really get away with growing quite a few nice plants though. A lot of them I had never expected to survive have taken the cold without any/much damage. The only thing I would miss if I headed south is the conifers I can grow in a cool area. It's strange summers here can get very hot and winters are very cold, it never stays comfortable for too long haha.
