I don't think it's phlox. They usually have 5 petals. I think it's Dame's Rocket ...

I was just reading up on it Hywel, seems you're right, four petals on the Dames Rocket (Hesperis Matronalis) and five on Phlox.....Seems it grows a mound of foliage in its first year and flowers in its second...Def wasnt there last year...lol...ps thanks H..:>)

It's a wild flower in some countries, but cultivated in gardens here.

The seeds might have spread naturally into your garden from somewhere else. I think it's pretty, but then it isn't in my garden ...

Maybe you could plant it where you want it, rather than leave it wherever it seeds itself. Maybe it would fit in better then.
