These tall Butterfly palms need their old fronds cut off. Photo taken at the San Diego Zoo on June 19, 2012.

This past winter was very dry and one of the warmest on record. The previous winter, during the same exact time (Dec. 2010) Queensland was experiencing their record, horrible floods...we had record rains and major flooding throughout southern California, too. The San Diego river went up to the highest point since 1965. It actually broke the seven year drought.

Yes, palms need to be trimmed back several times a year. I have a several butterfly palms...the one in the ground is finally starting to grow fast. It's been drought-stricken for 5 years.
