Yes, Lori, most varieties do. Ours has a faint scent, more diluted squash than freshly-squeezed juice. Philadelphus is a food plant for some moth larvae, so could be thought of as a good shrub to have. Many varieties are native to N. America, btw.

David - can I ask what the spread outwards on this shrub is ? I have just bought one and need to be careful re: space - the label says Height 6ft by Spread 6ft but that spread means length-ways - I need to know/determine how vigorous it will grow outwards - can you advise please ? Yours looks lovely

Hi, Giroffle!
The 6ft height is about right for this shrub, as does the 6ft spread, meaning how wide it will grow out sideways from the trunk. This one was in a former garden I had, and was already there. I found it fairly slow-growing, but always gave it a light prune back after the flowers had withered, more from habit than necessity, to, hopefully, promote even more blooms the following year.
I do hope that you can have the space for this shrub, especially next to a path you walk along, for the scent.

Is the trunk very thick - how wide ? I can't find any images of how a fully grown one looks like. And how far out from the wall would it grow - I'd like to train mine up neatly against the wall in between a Bamboo and a Palm in a semi-shaded area - the width of the bed from the wall is just over 2ft. I have the height and the spread I think but I am concerned about how it will grow out from the wall (how to manage that !) - do you think I would be OK with that ? many thanks for getting back. I am not sure whether to pot it for now and then try and put it down in the Autumn. I think I should be getting it to ground as soon as possible - yes/no ?.

Does Philadelphus( being named "Mock") have the nice scent of orange blossoms?
