Gardenias are sold as indoor plants here, they smell wonderful.

This one comes with thorns....(ouch).

That must be a different type?

Yes.....
I would love to have one of each type. It is my favorite flower.

Not surprised

The flowers and leaves look like a Natal plum.

Thanks Delonix, changed the name on the pic.

Natal Plum is the most widely planted shrub in southern California. It's everywhere, so extremely common! I hundreds of these plants at the beach today.
I'll post a pic with some fruit.
Gardenia cornuta doesn't have thorns! lol! :>)
Here's some of my other Natal Plum pics:

Well.....since this wasn't a Gardenia. I was given one as a gift from my mom-in-law. ;o))))))))

Do you have Gardenia cornuta from your mom-in-law?
I'll have to see if G. cornuta is common here. I've seen many species, however, not sure if I've seen this one.
The one, which is a must buy...is Gardenia taitensis (Tahitian Gardenia). It's very tropical and should love your hot summers. It would most likely have to brought indoor during winter. It's not too available here...it does grow here in San Diego, though.

Meanie:
Have you seen my pics with the fruit?
I like Natal plum. Although, here it's one of those shrubs which is overly used (in my opinion).

I believe that I commented on it!

Delonix,
My Natal Plum has doubled in size.....wow it grows really fast and flowers every day.
My new Gardenia is the common type but I do love it. Smells gorgeous.
Yes, I would love to have a Gardenia taitensis.

Meanie,
I love it too but it has thorns! It's planted towards the middle of the border so not too near my fingers!

Meanie:
No you didn't comment.

Alexandramou:
Yes, Natal plum had thousands of flowers every day of the year (on a large shrub). It's one of those shrubs which you don't have to water and it grows and blooms very well. This is the reason why it so widely used as a median plant here in San Diego and most of California.
