Spathodea campanulata - African Tulip Tree Flowers

OK, they are gorgeous!

Besides Delonix regia, Spathodea campanulata is my second favorite flowering tree!

I know you have a very mild climate. I think it still may be to cool for this tree to grow well, there. It's so tender to cold...with this being said: there's cases in Central Florida where this tree freezes to the ground and comes back in spring. Even very large trees can freeze to the ground with temps around 30ºF (-1ºC).

With all this discouragement. I would recommend this tree for your garden. lol! Because, if you receive just a little frost a year. It may be damaged a little; however, the tree will grow very fast in summer, especially with lots of water. It also blooms very young...when only 1 year old.

They probably fell in love with the flowers and just had to take them home. ;o/

I think it will do well here.....we get frost very rarely and last winter was one of those winters.

I hope it'll do well there! It most likely will love the hot summers. It just needs a lot of water...as it's a native to the tropical rain forest of Congo, Africa.

It's funny because Wikipedia says it's native to dry tropical forest, NOT TRUE!!! lol! :>)

My African Tulip tree is now 8ft/2.5m tall. The first year it didn't grow very fast...as it hardly got any water.

Have you seen this tree available at your plant nurseries?

I like the delonix too...it's a hard choice to make. both are amazing. Wikipedia asks for input...if you have reason to think that the info they publish is wrong you can amend or add data.

African Tulip tree is much easier to grow in San Diego than Delonix regia. Delonix regia requires very hot temps to bloom well. It also needs a drier soil, especially during winter. However, when D. regia blooms, it's very spectacular! African Tulip tree is very showy, especially a very large tree. It also bloom over a very long period of time. My little tree bloomed from the 1st of May 2011- mid-February of 2012...then it started to bloom again the first week of May 2012.

Wow such detail edging too

The flowers and flower buds are very large, also. The unopened flower contain water. If you press on the buds they will spurt water in your face. lol!

I can see they are big by your photo against your hand . lol the kids over here would use them for water bombs.

They're more like a water gun. lol!
