Hibiscus mutabilis

Hibiscus mutabilis (Hibiscus mutabilis)

This is the same flower I posted yesterday when it was white. Now it is pink and headed for red.

Very pretty. I haven't ever grown a hibiscus, which is shameful really, as they grow very well here in NZ. I didn't know they changed colour like that.

I grow Hibiscus, but just common sorts. I have never noticed it is changing colours so rapidly. Is it common feature or is it quality of this special one?

It is a trait found only in this one. The story goes that during the American Civil War, a Confederate soldier was shot and killed by one of these, and they thought it had absorbed his blood and changed colour. So its common name is Confederate Rose. "mutabilis" means variable or changable.
