The balsam buds are used in a pillow for chronic asthma and bronchitis sufferers....resinous and aromatic, I have used a small balsam stuffed pillow on my bed for years now and it works!

There are two ways to tell a balsam spruce from other spruce, instantly. 1. the needles are flat on one side with two white stripes running tip to tip...and 2. they are arranged on the upper side of the twig. The bark of the trunk is grayish and the cones are small, also borne on the upper side of the branch/twig...birds and animals eat away the papery cone leaving the centre part sitting upright - looking like a candle stick. When I was a child my Dad took me looking for Christmas trees and because of their lovely aroma we always chose a balsam fir.
