Asters gone to seed...

Asters gone to seed... (Aster umbellatus (Flat topped Aster))

The plants between 5 and 6 ft. tall...have died and dried.
the stalks are crisp and break very easily. It is strange that the plants stand up to the strong autumn winds which help disperse the fluffy seeds, but succumb to the weight of the snow. Next spring I will rake all the dead away and the new sprouts will be there already growing.

Yes, it sure is, Amy! These plants are amazing. I have planted some of the lower growing ciliolate asters in one of my flower beds (along with echinacea and phlox) to see how well they will adapt. The soil is almost totally sand and they look like they don't mind a bit!...nice and tall and blooming still...our first mini-winter stopped them for a short time. We have had summer temps yesterday and today...but according to the weatherman...it's going to get very cold and very windy overnight. arggghhh...
