Lulu, in many languages, chai is the word for tea.
I think it is just trendy to call black tea chai .
You can mix it with other substances and get different flavour of chai...such as Masala chai...which is a spiced tea.

Hi Lulu, Klahanie is correct as chai is the generic word for tea in India. In South Africa and more specify Durban, we also refer to it as masala tea and the recipe varies. My recipe contains cinnamon sticks,anise, fresh root ginger, cardamon/elachi, black or breakfast blend tea and milk. It is known to cure many medical problems and is very good for inflammation and sinus
