The bud has begun to open today! Amazing aren't they ~ i only planted it on boxing day! this one is 'orange sovereign' but it looks red in the picture.

They DO grow very quickly once they start! A sister of mine gave me a present of one in a box at Christmas 1981, I've not spent a year without some since then!!!
In all these years I've only ever bought about half a dozen at most. I bought 3 bulbs from the 1st International Market held here in 2001. About 5 years later I fertilized them & grew on the seeds that came from them. I now have at least 50 pots of Amaryllis which are starting their 3rd year of flowering! Some of the pots have several bulbs in them!
Has your Amaryllis opened now?

my poor amaryllis very nearly met with disaster yesterday when daughter in law pulled down the blind above it and very nearly chopped off one of the buds!
one flower began opening yesterday and is nearly fully open today, the bud that narrowly escaped execution is actually opening and there is a third bud not opened yet ~ so nearly there but not quite yet ~ oh there is another bud just 6" tall ~ yet to come!
i have to confess i may go and buy another ~ they are spectacular! thanks for your help and encouragement balcony!

I have had almost similar disasters! It is so easy to do! When I lower the blinds I always pull them towards me & guide them down with my hand while watching ll the time that a bud doesn't get caught! I had a close call a few days ago as one of the stems had bent INWARDS - away from the light - & it wasn't easy to get the blind over it once again!
I hope you are successful in finding a reduced plant or two! I'd love to do the same but in the few shops in town that have them none have offered any reduced, :-((
You are more than welcome, if you need any further help just ask. :-))

No luck yesterday ~ perhaps they had already sold out? But i think the supermarkets are a possibility?
2 out of 3 of the flowers are now out ~ just need the third to open to make a good picture ~ at the moment the two opened buds are facing opposite directions!
Many thanks for your very helpful advice
