those are huge flowers!

Amaryllis flowers are normally big - up to 6" across or more! This plant is the first of the Red with white stripes to open this year! I have a 2nd now though. :-))

I think mine maybe 4 - 5" across but not 6!!

I've just measured several of the flowers & they are all between 6 & 7 1/2 in across! The petals recurve a little at the tips but gently straightening them gives an extra inch! I used my wife's tape measure. I wanted to take a photo but I had no way of holding the tape up without damaging the flower.

oh, ok, I shall go and measure mine now!
thanks

well that was a nice surprise ~ the newest one to open is 5" across but the other two are 6" and nearly 7" ~ I am staggered!

Just like I was the first time it occurred to me to measure them!

Nice when plants give us those sort of surprises, I think that's a large part of the appeal!

I have to say I agree completely with you! :-))

While we are still talking about the sizes of the flowers, just this very morning I measured a new one that opened it flowers yesterday. It is white with red & white stripes. I thought it seemed bigger than the others but I also thought it might be an optical illusion created by the red & white stripes. I found my wife's tape measure & decided to measure it - the flowers measured 7 & 1/2 inches across!

A red one has also opened today with 7" flowers. I can't hold the tape to the flowers & take a photo at the same time otherwise I would do!

I'm going to upload the photos I took of them today.

Looking forward to seeing a photo (or two or three!) :-)) Today a big red one has opened a couple of buds so now I have 2 reds & a white one with red markings - they look wonderful together! :-))

the second bud hasnt opened yet, my mum bought herself one at christmas but its still only about 3" tall, at the same time she bought one for a friend ~ that one is tall and flowering!!!

i can well imagine the red and white look fabulous together, lovely to put striking and contrasting colours together

At this moment I have 7 plants in flower on our living room table! I'll upload a photo in a short while.
.
There are still more to come over the next few weeks as well! :-))

7?!?!?
Do you ever need to stake them?

2 Feb, 2013

Yes, SEVEN (7)! And, yes, I do! They sometimes become top heavy & I've even had a plat fall off the table onto the floor because the weight of the flowers pulled it over!
.
Which reminds me of a couple of years when our granddaughter was with us. One day I was in the kitchen when she came running in shouting, "Granddad. granddad!" I thought she hurt herself at first then she pulled me into the living room saying one of my flowers had died. Then I saw the plant lying on the table & about to fall off. I moved it further in & then went & found a cane.
.
In fact right now there is one that is bowing down half way to the table! I must find another cane from somewhere before it goes too far!
.
I've just taken a photo from where I'm sitting here at the computer & I'll upload it. Perhaps you'll be able to make it out!

I love the way children explain things!

Mine fell over the other day, partly because its so tall and in a small pot but also because it has a root growing out of the bottom!

It was her "panic" that really got to me! I couldn't imagine what was wrong till I got to see it for myself! Then I had to spend a few minutes trying to assure her that it was alright & no damage had been done. :-))

When my son was little he came running in from the garden saying mummy mummy have you got some silk? He brought a dead and slightly tatty butterfly in and thought I could mend it! It's hard to disappoint but I couldn't perform a miracle!

LOL! :-D)
