Hyophorbe lagenicaulis - Bottle Palm Cold Damaged

Hyophorbe lagenicaulis - Bottle Palm Cold Damaged (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis - Bottle Palm)

Even though San Diego, CA. has one of the mildest subtropical climates in the U.S. It occasionally gets a rare cold snap. This is what happens when you have six morning lows of 40 - 43ºF (4.4º - 6.1ºC). This palm is very tropical! Today it was enjoying the 70ºF (21ºC) weather and I'm sure very happy the temps are back to normal. Photo taken in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. on Jan. 16, 2013.

It will...it's just so unusual to any plant damage by cold here.

It's been very warm (at or above 80ºF /27ºC) the last 5 or 6 days. Today it was 82ºF (28ºC).

Yes, the temps have been above normal for the last 6 days.
So, 6 day of colder than normal and 6 days of above normal temps. lol! :>)

I've seen (on the internet) many parts of the UK are experiencing very cold weather. Also, I've seen the extremely cold temps recorded in London, England.

Yes not a good start, and the rain is getting to be a real pain now....

Dottydaisy2:

We got some good rain over this past weekend from the tropics. Now, a cold front came through last night giving us cool weather for today...then tomorrow and most of this week and next week it's suppose to warmer than normal again. The weather this month has been so topsy-turvy. Last January (2012) it was like summer. I wonder what February will bring.

Funny thing is...they grow fine where summers are not hot. I had one frond away in the bay area all summer long. What killed it was wet potting soil in December. My wife watered it outdoors on the porch..I meant to tell her let it go dry.

I had a very nice one in the SF Bay Area. I used to keep it outdoors until Thanksgiving then brought in indoors. It's a very tropical palm which loves heat and humidity.

Here's some photo of some others here in San Diego.
