Assorted Zinnia

I love zinnia. The first year I grew them they did really well. I have tried in subsequent years, but for some reason they have never done as well. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I didn't try last year, but I'm going to try again this year, possibly for the last time if they still don't thrive!

I had planted Zinnia a few years ago but I must admit that they have presented a beautiful showing this summer. i had planted them in an open bed which was along the roadside and there was no protect from the environmental elements, i.e. the salt spray and wind. They are now protected and I have planted them behind a wall with very little sea spray and kind of protected a bit from the wind.

I am a novice gardener and no means an expert but I have heard that one should not plant an annual in the same flowerbed within the consecutive year. One needs to choose a new flowerbed every consecutive year.
