They loose their leaves just before they bloom. Many tropical/subtropical trees do this. Examples are: Jacaranda, Erythrina, Delonix, Tabebuia, and many more.

Yes, Erythrina crista-galli grows very differently than most of the more tropical species. It typically bloom with most of its leaves.
